Kids’ Brains & Screens was created to give families and schools what has been missing for far too long: clear, science-based education on how screens affect the developing brain, so screen addiction can be prevented and reversed.
Grounded in both brain science and real-life experience, this work offers an authentic, practical approach that helps students and families understand not just what is happening with screens, but why it matters, how to prevent unnecessary struggle, and how to reset and recover when it takes hold.
Families everywhere are facing a new challenge.
Children are growing up in a digital environment designed to capture attention, shape behavior, and keep them coming back for more. Many parents sense that something isn’t right, but lack the language, the science, and the support to respond effectively.
ScreenStrong was created to change that. To give families clarity. To replace confusion with understanding. And to provide a path forward grounded in both science and real-life experience.
ScreenStrong is a national nonprofit movement dedicated to helping families raise children who are strong, resilient, and free from screen addiction.
ScreenStrong is not anti-technology. Instead, it equips parents with the knowledge and confidence to recognize when digital habits are replacing real-life experiences, family connection, and healthy development. The focus is on removing the most toxic screen activities, including video games, social media, and pornography, so kids can thrive.
What began as one family’s struggle has grown into a broader effort to provide evidence-based education, raise awareness, and offer practical solutions to families who are losing their children to screen addiction.
Melanie Hempe, RN, is the founder of ScreenStrong, author, and national speaker dedicated to helping families understand and prevent screen addiction. Her work began not as a professional pursuit, but as a personal crisis.
When her oldest son, Adam, developed a serious video game addiction and dropped out of college, Melanie found herself searching for answers that were not readily available. As a nurse trained at Emory University, she turned to the research on brain development, dopamine, and behavior.
What she discovered changed the course of her family, and ultimately led to the creation of ScreenStrong.
But it wasn’t just the science that shaped this work. It was living both paths.
She has experienced the pain of watching a child struggle with screen addiction. And she has experienced the freedom of raising children without it. That contrast became the foundation for everything that followed.
Melanie made a decision during those difficult years: She would never forget the pain so she could help other families find a better path forward. Today, she is known for her ability to translate complex brain science into clear, practical guidance for students, parents, and educators. Through her books, courses, and speaking, she has helped families across the country prevent and reverse unhealthy screen habits and rebuild stronger relationships.
